Poplar Bluff will have a brush with winter weather, but most snow will probably fall northward.

Sean Poulos of the National Weather Service Paducah said Monday the Poplar Bluff area could receive 1-2 inches of snowfall, but surface temperatures should melt it on contact.

“We may have temperatures of 34-35 degrees, not very good for accumulating snow, across a good chunk of the area,” Poulos explained, then noted heavy precipitation rates could still lead to some accumulation.

Van Buren and other northern cities are more likely to be impacted by the snowfall.

“There is potential for accumulating snow, primarily across portions of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. We have a winter storm watch in effect for primarily our northern tier counties from Van Buren to Marble Hill, Perryville... Those locations are most likely to experience accumulating snow in excess of 3 inches.”

The system is expected to drop 4-8 inches farther north in Missouri,.

The first wave of wintry mix will reach Southeast Missouri around 9 p.m. Tuesday and fall until 3 a.m. Wednesday. Poulos noted this is when accumulation is most likely to occur. Wind gusts of 25-35 miles per hour can be expected, Poulos said, but most of Butler County will be at little risk for outages.

“We may have some accumulation, but then once the precipitation lessens and we change back over to rain... we should see melting, and probably not much in the way of road impacts across a good chunk of the area by the time we wake up Wednesday morning,” he said.

Wednesday itself will be cloudy and rainy with a high around 41.
