The stoplight at Oak Grove and Shelby Road is not working and Poplar Bluff city officials are asking everyone to use caution at the intersection, especially with schools resuming Thursday.

The light is flashing red in all directions and should be treated like a four-way stop, said Poplar Bluff Street Superintendent Jerry Lawson.

While the cause for the malfunction is unknown, Lawson said, “We were lucky at least it’s flashing and not just completely black.”

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Mike McClain will have police officers at the intersection in Thursday morning and afternoon, with their lights flashing to remind drivers to use caution.

Lawson said Municipal Utilities and street department employees have been working to repair the light since Tuesday but have been unsuccessful. Local officials reached out to the Missouri Department of Transportation. A part for the control module box is needed, but has not been immediately available, Lawson said. Local officials were able to locate the part, which should arrive Friday.

When the street department shop supervisor checked the code the module was flashing, MoDOT said the part was no longer good.

Lawson said, “That’s when we decided, well, there’s no sense in trying to keep switching out parts and pieces. We got on the phone and located this one. Hopefully, Friday mid-morning, it will be in and replaced and we’ll be back to normal.”
