MAIN EVENT: Broseley Senior Center to host New Years Day meal

Wednesday, December 28, 2022

This week’s MAIN EVENT is at the Broseley Senior Center.

The center will host one of its two annual fundraisers with a New Year’s Day meal from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Sunday.

It is among many New Year’s bashes planned this week in area. The center is located at 2470 County Road 650.

Center director Carol Brotherton explained the site will be open on New Year’s Day since the center is traditionally open for the holiday.

The traditional menu will include hog jowl, fried potatoes, cooked cabbage, black-eyed peas, cornbread, dessert and drink and will cost $9.

The two fundraisers each year are the New Year’s Day Dinner and the homecoming in October.

“All the proceeds will go to run the center,” Brotherton said. “With everything going up so high, for cost of supplies I will use it to buy food to serve to our seniors.”

Monday through Friday breakfast is served from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. The center is open from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for lunch. Friday lunch is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “because it’s too hard to fit that many people in an hour and a half’s time so we had to back it up.”

Daily attendance varies with the menu.

“We had fried chicken today and we had over 80,” she said. “Friday, we will be serving fish and over 200 will probably attend. We have fish every Friday and people like their fish. I expect it’ll be busy Friday.”

Attendance at the facility since COVID is growing, Brotherton said.

“Eventually, we’ll get the bingo back three times a week. Usually, once a month, a nurse from a local nursing home will do blood pressure, sugar and oxygen checks,” she said.

You don’t have to be a senior to eat at the center, she said. A senior is considered 55 and older.

Brotherton said, “Anybody who grew up in this area and may have moved away, we have a lot of pictures on the walls of the Broseley Tigers going back to the 1930s. We have people who come and they’ll eat lunch with us. Then, they’ll look at the pictures because they’re all along the wall trying to find mom or dad or aunt or uncle.”

Anyone wanting to order carryout on New Year’s Day may start calling 573-328-1126 for carry outs as early as 9 a.m.
