Justice defends homeowners, Second Amendment rights

To the Editor:

As a patriotic conservative and Trump supporter, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a right that is more uniquely American than our right to bear arms. Our founding fathers recognized the right and the need for the populace to be armed. People have a right to defend themselves and their property from all those who would do it harm.

Indeed, it is because of this right to defend ourselves that Missouri has one of the most expansive laws out there allowing homeowners to defend themselves and their property. I am proud that our state has such a broad castle doctrine in place to enshrine one of our most cherished values: a man’s home is his castle, and he has a right to stand his ground against any of those who break in and try to threaten him in his home.

That is why I stand with the gun-owning McCloskeys as they defend against the politically motivated prosecution of the St. Louis Circuit Attorney. The McCloskeys were enjoying a quiet evening at home when an angry mob tore down the gates and began storming their private community. It looks like the McCloskeys were aware of the nationwide “peaceful protests” that often involved rioting, looting and assaults and they decided to defend themselves. Maybe they can be faulted for poor firearm handling — as a gun-toting Republican, I can point out a few things they could have done better. But that is besides the point.

The point is, an angry mob stormed the gates and were making threatening advances against the McCloskeys’ home. They were completely within their rights as Americans and rights as Missourians to pick up arms and stand their ground, and that is exactly what they did. And guess what, those very same protestors backed off. Not a finger was laid on them. Looks like the temptation to loot is less appealing when Americans exercise their right to defend their lives in their homes.

Now, in a total abuse of prosecutorial discretion, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner (the same Kim Gardner who bungled her own investigation into former Governor Greitens) is trying to vilify the McCloskeys for exercising their rights according to Missouri law. This is a completely baseless prosecution; we all saw what happened: Americans using their rights to defend their home. But no. Kim Gardner is up for re-election and in need to appeal to the crazy lefties out there, so she decides to file some confounded charge against the McCloskeys.

I’m having none of that. As Senator, I will fight for the gun rights of all Missourians, and if Missouri’s castle doctrine needs to be expanded even more to make sure this kind of baseless prosecution never happens again, then I will be the first to lead the charge. I believe in the God-given right to self-defense and to protect our homes and families from those who wish us harm. I stand with Missouri gun-owners against any attempt from the government to attack them from using their rights. When it comes to crazy lefties trying to take away our guns, I will always be the first to stand and fight.
