Join us for a day of service and prayer Feb. 29

Friday, January 31, 2020

Every four years the calendar contains a 366th day, Feb. 29.

As we learned in school, this leap day is needed because it takes the earth approximately 365.25 days to travel around the sun.

So, thanks to the Gregorian calendar making a needed adjustment, we have an “extra” day this month.

Recently local leaders were discussing this special date and what could be done with that bonus of time.

It was agreed that an appropriate use would be a day of service and prayer.

Yesterday, at the Ag Expo, Reps. Hardy Billington and Jeff Shawan presented a resolution encouraging and celebrating community service to be performed on that date.

We at the Daily American Republic are proud to join area leaders and challenge citizens to serve and/or pray for their neighbors.

United Gospel Rescue Mission will host a brunch to kickoff the day, at 10 a.m. Feb. 29. After the meal, groups can dispatch their members to perform civic volunteer projects or pray for the great people who call our area “home.”

If your church, Sunday school class, civic club, family or group of friends would like to participate, please join in for brunch and some brief motivational remarks.

With grateful hearts we are honored to partner with local officials to make our community stronger by asking you to pray for and serve our neighbors on the last day of this month.

We are asking you to share with us any projects being planned to better our community.

Email you or your group’s endeavors to dfarley@darnews.com, so we can help share your story as we strive for a better Poplar Bluff and Butler County through the power of prayer and service.

Let’s keep leaping forward!
