• The Butler County Red Cross has approved a schoolwide nutrition program.

Nell Williams, representative of the Southwestern Division of the American Red Cross, gave a presentation to the board yesterday on the importance of childhood nutrition and claimed malnutrition was responsible for 75% of child mortality. The proposed program will bring a nutrition expert to Poplar Bluff to educate students on “body-building food.”

With over $600 in the bank, BCRC voted to fund the program and replenish the treasury with a fundraiser. The program will likely begin next fall.

• The Butler County Volunteer Fire Protection District is preparing for a massive bond sale to finance new buildings and equipment.

The BCVFP board has plans for eight new substations around the county and one main station at the intersection of Township Line Road and Route PP. They also intend to purchase three new trucks.

At last night’s meeting, the board approved an upper limit of $500,000 in revenue bond sales; two voted in favor and one abstained. Board President John West said the expansion would likely only require $375,000 in bonds, noting the district “was well within its means” and could sell over $800,000 if needed. Only as many bonds as are needed will be sold.

A member of the Missouri Service Office will attend the next meeting to discuss how the new substations will affect insurance rates.
