The Kentucky Headhunters will be headed to Doniphan to rock the concert stage June 29, as the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce hosts its fourth annual FreedomFest at the Ripley County Fairgrounds.

The native Kentuckian band is sure to suit local tastes, featuring a style which smoothly combines country, blues and southern rock.

The band boasts 10 compilations, and 23 singles.

Its highest-peaking single, Oh Lonesome Me, peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1990.

Other well-known “Headhunter” hits are Dumas Walker, Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine, and Rock and Roll Angel.

The band’s four members are Doug Phelps (bass guitar, vocals), Greg Martin (lead guitar, vocals), and brothers Richard Young (rhythm guitar, vocals) and Fred Young (drums, vocals).

Additionally, they have accumulated three Country Music Association awards, an Academy of Country Music award and a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1990 for Pickin On Nashville.

Concert sponsors are Agri-Gro, Current River Ford and Countryside Chevrolet.

Gates for FreedomFest will open at 2 p.m., and admission will be $15. Kids 12 and under will be admitted free.

The concert will begin around 7:30 p.m., with JR and the All-Stars opening.

The annual FreedomFest pageant will take place earlier that evening, in the Whitwell building, with royalty titles given to contestants age 0 through 20. Jo Worley will return as pageant coordinator.

The chamber always tries to make each year’s celebration bigger and better, and to that end this year they have decided to bring in more bounce houses for the youngsters to enjoy.

“We will have two separate parks, one for the small children and toddlers, and a different one for the older kids,” says Jake Netherland.

The family entertainment area will also include well-loved, competitive yard games such as corn hole and (giant) tic tac toe.

Plans are still in the developmental stage, but Cody Young, who is coordinating the event, is working out the details on some new ideas that will be announced as the event draws closer.

“All of the usual favorite attractions will be returning. There will be a game truck for video game enthusiasts, two escape rooms, lazer tag, and an exotic animal petting zoo,” says Young.

“We will also bring back the photo booth, and of course we will close out the event with a big fireworks show,” he says.

Paw Patrol characters will be on hand for photo opportunities and to entertain the youngsters.

The chamber will again raffle off a new Rice trailer. Ticket information will be shared in the weeks ahead.
