Dorothy Wheeling

Dorothy Mae Wheeling, 101, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away peacefully in her home, Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024.

Dorothy was born July 31, 1922, to Lenvil Bert and Clara (Allen) Wheeling in Butler County, Missouri.

Dorothy was a founding member of Grace United Methodist Church of Poplar Bluff. She worked in the office of Florshein Shoe Company for 38 years. Dorothy traveled the United States and many countries in the world throughout her life. She helped organize bus trips to Cardinals baseball games and miscellaneous tourist attractions across the U.S. for employees of the shoe factory. Dorothy was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan herself. She was an active participant in the Mid-South Senior Olympics of Poplar Bluff. She received many medals and had them proudly displayed in her home. Dorothy was an inspiration and confidant to her family. She was a caregiver at her home for her mother, Clara Wheeling, until her passing in 1996. Dorothy enjoyed spending time outdoors, piddling in the yard, gardening, and caring for the animals.

Dorothy is survived by one sister, Doris “Dottie” Duckworth; two nieces, Angie Lawson and Joy Lynn (Gary) Stratton; four nephews, Kim (Connie) Wheeling, Billy Joe Vinson, Ernie (Kay) Wiley, and Nathan Wiley; along with numerous great nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Monroe and Carol Wheeling; two sisters, Dolly Vinson and Fern Wiley; special friend of many years, D.W. “Dock” Browning.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. - noon Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Cotrell Willow Ridge Funeral & Cremation Services. Funeral service will follow beginning at noon with Pastor Susan Boyles officiating. Burial will take place at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The Wheeling family would like to thank Angie Lawson for being caregiver in the home and Kim and Connie Wheeling for caring for Dorothy up until her passing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Grace United Methodist Church of Poplar Bluff.
