Room at the Shed, an overnight warming center in Poplar Bluff, will open when temperatures fall below 20 degrees starting Sunday.

The center, which is filling a void in the community, will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the Bread Shed, located at 203 N. D St.

Plans for the center were finalized Thursday afternoon by community volunteers and nonprofit organizations who don’t want anyone to suffer from the freezing temperatures. Anyone who doesn’t have adequate heating may use the shelter.

Among the volunteers and organizations are The Bread Shed, Christway Ministries, Haven House and FCC Behavioral Health.

“Bread Shed is filling a huge need in our community and we are thankful for them hosting Room at the Shed,” said Amber Tinker, Haven House director.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Matt Winters said, “I am grateful for the group of organizations and volunteers that have come together to provide this much-needed service in our community. This is a group effort of organizations that have a history of serving those in need.”

FCC Behavioral Health public relations officer Craig Jamison explained his organization became involved because the nonprofits and volunteers asked them to help.

“We are honored to be involved,” Jamison said. “The community really pulled together to fill this void. We are there because of the community volunteers.”

Jamison explained hosting the warming shelter will likely cost the Bread Shed double since they will be using their utilities much more often.

Bread Shed will still have their distribution days and other regular activities. The facility will be cleaned and sanitized during the day.

Organizers are asking for individuals, businesses, clubs and churches to consider donating to the Bread Shed since they are “filling a huge need in our community.”

Donations may be made to The Bread Shed by calling 573-712-7356, going to the website breadshed.org or the Facebook page. or scanning the QR code included with this article.

SMTS will issue trip passes to facilitate transportation in the mornings when people leave for the day, helping them get to other daytime warming centers like the Butler County Health Department, the Poplar Bluff Public Library or to businesses that are open.

Butler County Health Department is open as a warming shelter during normal business hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The library main branch is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.

Inclement weather may impact opening days for the health department and library.
