FREE ACCESS: AWA plans discounted adoption, microchipping events

Friday, January 12, 2024

Pet owners and potential adopters are invited to three reduced-cost events next week: a discounted adoption day and two microchipping clinics, all held by the Animal Welfare Alliance.

All adoptions are 25% off on Monday, Jan. 15 for the Puppies Have a Dream adoption event. Adopters are invited to adopt a dog or cat during open hours at the AWA No Kill Shelter and PetSmart.

The normal adoption fee for an adult dog is $200 and covers spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, tags and a microchip.

Pet owners will also have two opportunities to get their pets microchipped at low cost on Wednesday and next Saturday. In honor of a celebrity birthday, the Betty White Birthday Celebration microchip clinic will be held from 12-2 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the No Kill Shelter. Microchips and registration are $20. The process is quick and easy, according to AWA Director Corretta Bishop.

“You can just bring your pets to the shelter and get them microchipped,” she said. Microchips are injected under the skin and contain contact information for the pet, enabling animals to be returned to their families even if their collars are lost or removed.

A second microchip clinic will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 20 at PetSmart for the same price.

The AWA also offers $50 vouchers to help pay for spay and neuter surgeries. Voucher applications are available at the No Kill Shelter and online. Bishop said in a previous interview that spaying and neutering pets keeps shelters from being overwhelmed.

“We are at capacity. Sometimes we’re over capacity, but that is because of the lack of people getting their pets spayed and neutered,” she said.

The No Kill Shelter also contains a pet food bank.
