Ralph Barks

On Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, Ralph Eugene Barks, 94, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri passed away peacefully with his beloved wife of 68 years, Ella “Mae” Barks (Nee Oost) at his side.

Born Oct.14, 1929 in Shook, Missouri to the late Elmer and Myrtle Barks (Nee Underwood), he left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. From an early age, Ralph embraced the core values of family, instilling within him a strong work ethic and deep respect for the land and animals on the family farm. These early lessons became the core of his character, guiding him through a life dedicated to hard work, family, and service to his community and country. Ralph proudly served his country as a member of the Army 2nd Infantry Division (Indian Head) in the Korean War demonstrating unwavering courage and dedication, earning a Purple Heart among other medals of honor. His commitment to duty extended beyond the battlefield, as he became the loyal patriarch of his family.

As a husband, Ralph exemplified the true meaning of commitment and devotion. His love for Mae was patient, generous, and steadfast. Their marriage was a wonderful example of an authentic love that stood the test of time.

A devoted father to four daughters, Cindy Hunt, Sherry (Richard) Zaleuke, Brenda Powell and Jennifer (Mark) Parker, Ralph played an integral role in shaping the lives of his children, instilling values of integrity, hard work, and compassion. His guidance was a source of inspiration, and his legacy lives on through the family he raised with love and care.

To his grandchildren, Megan (Curtis) Simino, Lindsey (Patrick) Murphy, Jessica Powell, Stephanie (Pedro) Soares, Katie Powell, Melissa Powell, and Tyler Parker, Ralph was not only a grandfather but a source of endless joy, constant support and simple wisdom. His eyes sparkled with pride as he watched each generation grow and was often caught quietly smirking in delight at his 13 great grandchildren.

In the community, Ralph was known for his kindness and generosity. A man of few words whose lived actions spoke volumes. His quiet strength and unwavering deeds resonated louder than words could convey. Whether serving as a volunteer firefighter and eventually fire chief or volunteering at the Veterans Home, Ralph embodied the spirit of selflessness that endeared him to many. This same spirit earned him the admirable title of Worshipful Master at two Masonic lodges and additional leadership positions within the Order of the Eastern Star.

Ralph is survived by his sisters Faye Stevenson and Shirley Charles. He is preceded in death by sisters Beulah Noldge and Thelma Haynes and brother Melvin Barks. Services to honor and remember Ralph will be held on Friday, Dec. 22 at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, Missouri. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Mason and Eastern Star ceromonies at 12:30 p.m. Funeral at 1 p.m. Final interment at 2 p.m. Bloomfield Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Disabled American Veterans or Fisher House in Ralph Barks’ name. May his soul find eternal peace, and may we carry forward the lessons of love and kindness he so generously bestowed upon us.
