Santa Claus will visit the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum three times in December.

He will talk with children from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 2, 9 and 16. Parents may take photos of their children with Santa at various areas in the museum, the red Missouri Pacific caboose or anywhere outside, weather permitting. Candy will be given to the children.

Admission is free, but donations to maintain the museum are appreciated.

December is a great time to complete your Christmas shopping in the decorated 1928 Frisco Train Station across Fifth Street from the Black River Coliseum, according to volunteers.

The museum’s Train Shop is fully stocked with engines, Amtrak and freight cars, tracks and many accessories for model train layouts.

Customers are offered a 10% discount if they become museum members. Annual memberships are still $15 per person or $25 per family. All proceeds from the Train Shop are used to maintain the 95-year-old Frisco Depot which has been the museum’s home since it opened in 1991.

After visiting with Santa, visitors may view the new model train layout under construction, a new overhead train layout, an English train layout and building improvements.

Regular hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays. Call 785-4539 or 686-2241 if you cannot come on Saturday. The museum also will be open Dec. 23 and 30.

Since July 1, the museum has attracted 932 visitors from 101 cities in 22 states. Museum board members said they appreciate everyone who supports the museum and hope residents have a wonderful Christmas with their loved ones.

The museum’s gift list for Santa includes new volunteers which are needed to greet visitors, maintain the museum, make improvements and do yard work. Those interested in being a volunteer (even if only one Saturday a month), can come to the museum or call 573-686-2241 for more information.

Dave Silverberg is a member of the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum board.
