The Butler County Health Department is “taking public health on the road,” according to Administrator Emily Goodin, thanks to a new mobile health unit. The on-the-road clinic will provide residents of 20 counties with vaccines, STI testing and WIC resources.

“We offer a lot of services both in-house and off-site as well. This helps protect us from the elements and also offers a level of privacy,” Goodin said.

Compared to the tents of previous off-site events, the trailer includes a bathroom and a patient space that can be divided into two separate areas.

In addition to COVID and flu vaccinations, Goodin added, “We’ll be able to go out into all the surrounding areas and do STI testings, and then also we’re hoping to do WIC in Neelyville, Qulin, and stuff like that, too.”

BCHD’s sexually transmitted infections prevention team serves an area of 20 counties.

Operations Director Amanda Fitzwater said the new unit is a valuable tool for reaching those without reliable transportation.

“Transportation is a big problem. You know, people can’t always get over here, so now we can go to them,” she said.

The truck and trailer were acquired through COVID-related funds dispensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services

“We were able to utilize those COVID funds and bring it back out to the community,” Goodin explained.

The unit will likely hit the road in early January 2024.

“We’re pretty proud of it. We’re happy to offer it to our community,” Goodin said.
