FREE ACCESS: Sheriff warns of scam calls impersonating BCSD

Wednesday, August 9, 2023

Scammers are calling area residents demanding payment for alleged warrants or fines, warns Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs.

He does not want anyone to fall victim to scammers’ demands for money.

“We keep getting reports of scams where people are getting calls saying the callers are deputies with Butler County and demanding payment over the telephone,” Dobbs said. “We never ever call anyone about warrants or fines and demand payment of any kind. I don’t know of any law enforcement agency that does.”

Hang up, stressed Dobbs, who believes the calls are originating outside of the country.

“Don’t give any personal information over the telephone,” he said. “Never give anyone your social security number over the phone. The general rule is never give money to strangers over the phone. Never share personal information to anyone who contacts you.”

Those who are actually falling victim to the scam are “usually law abiding citizens who fear being arrested,” he said.
