Bro. Hubert Payne

Bro. Hubert Leroux Payne, 92, of Doniphan, Missouri, passed to his eternal home on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2023, at the John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

He was born Feb. 1, 1931, in Naylor, Missouri, and was the son of W.C. and Ella Payne.

On Sept. 3, 1951, Hubert married Eleanor McClaren in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and would have been married for 72 years on their next anniversary. She survives.

He also is survived by his daughter, Debbie (James Ray) Crook of Doniphan; his sons, Kevin (Janet) Payne of Doniphan and Joseph (Melonie) Payne of Dexter; and a daughter-in-law, Debbie Payne of Lincolnton, North Carolina. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Jimmy, Jonathon, Jason, Genice, Geoffrey, Kiera, Erica, Moriah, and Josiah, and nine great-grandchildren, Ella, Rolen, Hannah, Hailey, Cody, Kameron, Trey, Thatcher and Wrenyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother James, and son Ronnie.

Bro. Hubert was a combat veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was also one of the charter members of J.A. Ashby VFW Post 3485 in Doniphan. He was well known around the area for being an accomplished carpenter, building and remodeling many homes. He also raised cattle. His main passion was preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, pastoring several churches for over 60 years, impacting many lives during his ministry. He leaves a legacy to family and friends of dedication, compassion, a giving heart, and a desire to serve God.

Funeral services was at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Hunt White Memorial Gardens Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation was from 5 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3.
