Shows bring zoo animals, bulls

Main Event this week is all about one world, many animals.

While that may be the theme of an event Saturday at Lake Wappapello, it also describes what’s on tap for area residents over the weekend.

Animals from South America to Africa, Australia and North America will be part of an event starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center.

This free event will be feature ambassador animals from the Dickerson Park Zoo education department. Two showings will be given, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

At 7 p.m., Battle of the Bulls kicks off at Ray Clinton Park.

This is hosted by the Three Rivers College Rodeo team and Farm Credit of Southeast Missouri.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids eight and under.

The event will include an opportunity to see bull riders testing their skills, along with family activities like bounce houses and food trucks.

— Downtown Sikeston Music in the Park, 6-8 p.m. July 21 WHERE Legion Park, Sikeston WHAT There is no charge for admission. Bring a lawn chair, food and the entire family to Legion Park in Historic Downtown Sikeston.

— Battle of the Bulls, 7 p.m. July 22. WHERE Ray Clinton Park. COST Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 8 and under. WHAT The Three Rivers College Rodeo Team and Farm Credit Southeast Missouri present an action-packed evening of bull riding. Bounce houses and food trucks will also be on site. — Prevention Summit, 10 a.m. July 24 WHERE Westwood Center COST Free WHAT Organized by Missouri Highlands Health Care, this event is a chance to learn more about how to prevent illness. Speakers from MHHC, Butler County Health Department, FCC and Butler County Community Resource Council. Lunch provided by FCC.

— Crochet College, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. July 24. WHERE Poplar Bluff Municipal Library, Main Branch. COST Free. WHAT A class teaching basic crochet stitches with the option to start an easy project. Yarn and hooks are provided. Open to ages 7 and up, no registration required.

— Storytime, 10:30 a.m. July 25 WHERE Poplar Bluff Municipal Library, Main Branch.

— Women’s Self Defense Workshop, 6-8 p.m. July 25 WHERE Xtreme Gymnastics LLC COST $25 WHAT Practical techniques for day to day life and protection. The first portion of the workshop will be lecture/learning. After the lecture portion there will be hands on practice using the learned techniques through partner drills and bag work

— Lunch & Learn: Diabetic Foot Ulcers & Revolutionary Wound Care, noon July 28. WHERE Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce. COST Free. WHAT Dr. Maxine Theriot will present on diabetic wound care topics, including wound assessment, innovative approaches to foot ulcers, multidisciplinary care and self-management strategies.
