Poplar Bluff Regional Giving Circle encourages new membership

Thursday, July 6, 2023

The Poplar Bluff Regional Giving Circle is a local organization that was established in 2012 with the aim of supporting charitable causes within the community.

Initiated in the area by retired Poplar Bluff teacher and board president, Charles Harper, the Giving Circle brings together individuals who pool their resources to provide grants to area charities and non-profit organizations, Harper explained. Harper went on to say that by focusing on small projects that may not be included in nonprofit organizations’ budgets, the Giving Circle strives to make a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of men, women and children in need.

“The Giving Circle focuses on initiatives that may not be within the budgets of nonprofit organizations,” said Harper. “Our grants have supported various programs, including food assistance, volunteer training and hygiene supplies.

“I like to say it’s the best kept secret in Poplar Bluff, so many people don’t know what we do and we really want to get the word out.”

The Giving Circle accepts grant applications from local nonprofit organizations each year. Harper explained that a nine-member board reviews the applications and then selects options for funding. Subsequently, all members of the Giving Circle participate in the voting process to determine how the funds should be allocated among the selected submissions. This democratic approach, he said, ensures all members have a say in deciding which initiatives to support, fostering transparency and inclusivity within the organization.

Since its establishment, the Poplar Bluff Regional Giving Circle has provided grants to numerous charities and nonprofit organizations in the area. Harper stated some past grant recipients have included organizations such as Northside Nutrition, Recycling Grace, Sleep in Heavenly Peace and The Bread Shed, just to name a few. These grants have supported various projects, including food programs, volunteer training and the provision of hygiene items for those facing hardship.

According to a past article, in 2021 the giving circle awarded its largest grant amount ever, totaling $9,750. The grants were distributed among eight charitable organizations in the area. The fundraising group has now donated over $50,000 to more than 16 charities.

With its commitment to making a positive impact and fostering community engagement, the Giving Circle stands as a testament to the power of collective giving and compassion, he said.

Harper said it is his hope that through ongoing support, the organization can continue to uplift the community and improve the lives of those in need as it has for many years.

Membership in the giving circle is accessible to all interested individuals. To join, members pay a $50 annual membership fee. Options for joining include mailing a check to Poplar Bluff Regional Giving Circle 1085 Township Line Rd. Poplar Bluff, MO 63901 or visiting the organization’s official website at pbgivingcircle.org.
