Area leaders say they have organized an event to extend a warm welcome to the new superintendent of Poplar Bluff School District, Dr. Aaron Cornman, and the new area representative for Southeast Missouri Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Darrin Scott.

The welcome event will take place at 8 a.m. Friday at the Northside Church of the Nazarene, Pastor Greg Gilberto of Northside Church of the Nazarene said. The public is invited to join pastors, community leaders and others as they gather for coffee, donuts and prayer.

Gilberto highlighted the significance of this gathering, stating it provides an opportunity for the community of faith to learn more about their new leaders. It will include a question and answer session.

“This is an opportunity to meet our new leader that was voted in by the school board, but we want to welcome them as a community of faith, as pastors and community leaders in our in our area. We feel it’s very, very important to pray over our leaders as they get the wisdom to lead our school system into the in the right direction,” he said.

Cornman, a Gideon native, is set to assume the role of superintendent for the R-I district this month. He previously resided in Poplar Bluff while attending Three Rivers College and brings with him a wealth of experience. According to previous interviews, Cornman’s teaching career began in the late 1990s in Risco and later extended to Malden and Advance before he transitioned to superintendent in 2007. He also has experience working with special needs students, as well as serving as a pastor at Harviell Baptist Church in the early 2000s.

With a doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Louis University, earned in 2005, Cornman’s educational background also includes a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in elementary/secondary administration from Three Rivers College and Southeast Missouri State University.

Cornman has previously expressed his commitment to addressing the district’s needs, particularly in terms of representation at the state level. He stated he aims to be a strong voice for the concerns of Poplar Bluff, emphasizing the importance of positive relationships with parents, teachers and students.

“I hope to be a voice in Poplar Bluff for the needs of the district,” stated Cornman in a prior interview.

He said his first order of business will be “establishing strong channels of communication throughout the district, not only with fellow educators but with community members, business owners and the ministerial alliance.”

The event, according to Gilberto, seeks to not only facilitate a warm welcome to the new superintendent and area representative for FCA, but also foster connections between pastors, community leaders and the school district, encouraging collaboration and understanding.
