Thank you Kiwanis, Buddy Ball

Saturday, June 24, 2023

We want to take a moment to recognize and thank the volunteers of Kiwanis and Buddy Ball.

Both groups this summer have worked to provide inclusive activities for children in our community, and this is something they’ve done for many years.

We’re very fortunate to have so many people with big hearts in our community who want to make sure all of our youth have these opportunities.

Kiwanis is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to complete the second portion of an inclusive playground at Bacon Park. The park is maintained by the group through volunteer hours and fundraising.

They’ve already raised thousands to install inclusive playground equipment, which helps ensure children of all abilities can join the fun.

They plan to add 3,500-square-feet of equipment when this fundraising campaign is complete. They already have $110,000 of their $160,000 goal.

Buddy Ball has for years hosted baseball games for children with physical, mental and developmental disabilities. It allows every child to be part of a team and hear the crowd cheering for them as they circle the bases.

The group expanded its efforts in 2022 to an older division, high school to adults, as some of its members grew up and wanted to continue in the game they love.

In years past, about 20 volunteers have ensured its more than 60 players get a full season.

Next week they’ll host an awards banquet for their players as they close the season.

We can’t think of a better celebration.

Thank you again to all of the people in our community who recognize the need to show our love and support for everyone in our community. Thank you, especially to those who make a concentrated effort to support those who may feel excluded because of their differences rather than celebrated as they should be.
