July 10 deadline set for applications to Poplar Bluff City Council

Thursday, June 22, 2023

Residents who are interested in serving on the Poplar Bluff City Council have until 4 p.m. July 10 to submit letters of interest.

Council members are expected to vote to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of at-large member Robert Duckett. A date has not been set for the council to take action.

Duckett announced Monday he needed to step down immediately due to family issues and having moved out of the city limits.

Duckett was elected to the council in April. The individual selected will serve until the April 2024 election, when the seat will be placed on the ballot to fill the remainder of Duckett’s original three-year term, officials said Monday.

Because Duckett holds an at-large position, applicants can live anywhere within the city limits.

Applicants are asked to submit a resume and a statement sharing why they want to be appointed, as well as their goals and objectives.

To qualify, individuals must be 21 years of age, a citizen of the United States, a qualified voter and an inhabitant of the city for one year, according to information released by the city. No person shall be appointed to this position who is in arrears for any tax lien, forfeiture or defalcation in office. Any person who shall be appointed to the at-large position on the Council must remain an inhabitant of the City throughout his or her term on the Council.

Letters should be submitted to the Mayor of the City of Poplar Bluff, 501 Vine Street, Poplar Bluff, Missouri, 63901.
