Arbor Day tree give away

Thursday, May 4, 2023
Close up of a flower of an adult American tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, is shown.

Tulip Poplar tree seedlings will be given away from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation office, 430 N. Second St.

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation’s Horticulturist Murray Hammond said the tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) actually is not a poplar, but a member of the magnolia family. The leaves are tulip-shaped, alternate, and simple. The leaf is smooth on both surfaces, dark green and lustrous above, pale and often with a slight whitish bloom beneath.

It is also known as yellow-poplar, tulip magnolia, tulip tree and whitewood.

Tulip poplars grow rapidly and are a great ornamental and shade tree, Hammond said. The fruits provide food for squirrels in the late fall and winter months, and the white-tailed deer often browse on the twigs.

A plant fact sheet on tulip poplar from USDA will be given with each tree that will explain adaptation, establishment and management.
