Thursday, April 20, 2023

John Joseph Mureno, 59, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away Tuesday April 18, 2023. He was of Italian and Irish descent, both sets of grandparents immigrated from their native counties.

He was born Jan. 7, 1964, in Poplar Bluff, to George and Gertrude Mureno.

John grew up in south Poplar Bluff until the age of 7, when the family moved east to the farm. After many years he would come back to south Poplar Bluff and spend his last years not far from where he was born. John’s faith, especially in later years was important to him. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

John graduated from Poplar Bluff Senior High in 1982. He was a welder by trade. John never met a stranger and made countless friends as he worked throughout the country on various constructions jobs. He enjoyed life and spent many a day searching for arrow heads and many a nights playing pool, winning quite a few pool tournaments. He was blessed with a gift to draw and could create a portrait in no time. John faced very difficult health challenges in the last few years of his life but through it all he never complained. He said our job here is to help others and he always had a kind word and a positive outlook.

John is survived by three siblings, Tom (Jennifer) Mureno of Longview, Texas, Angela (Phillip) Norwood of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Amanda (Ray) Leake of Panama City, Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gertrude Mureno, and brother, Roy Mureno.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many, many friends.

Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2023 at Fitch-Hillis Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Poplar Bluff at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2023, with Father Samson Dorival officiating.
