The votes were taken after three council members were sworn in to start new terms.

Ward 5 representative Robert Smith retained his seat in the April 4 election. At-large council members Steve Davis and Chris Taylor chose not to run for re-election.

Former council member Mark Massingham was elected by voters to one of the at-large seats, while Robert Duckett won as a write-in candidate.

New members were elected to three-year terms.

Smith, Davis and Taylor thanked the public and other council members, speaking before new members were sworn in.

Davis, who had served as mayor for the past two years, shared Poplar Bluff has a bright future ahead.

“It’s been a great honor,” he said. “There’s been much progress in the past few years. A lot has been accomplished. This has been a collective effort by the council and many community leaders who have worked together to move things forward.”

The good work will continue with progress on future Interstate 57, a new city hall, a new airport terminal, and other ongoing projects, Davis said.

Council members must lead with a servant’s heart, being selfless and focused on others, Taylor said.

“It’s not about power or credit,” she said. “In other words, to serve with purpose, being motivated with the right motives.”

Taylor thanked her husband and daughters for their support during the past three years.

Smith said he would continue to serve to the best of his ability.

“I would like to thank the citizens of Poplar Bluff and especially Ward 5 for allowing me to serve the past three years,” he said. “It’s been an honor and I appreciate you putting your confidence in me.”
