Area students are gearing up for the 12th annual Super Kids Camp at Wheatley School in Poplar Bluff. The school will be taking registration for the camp from 2-5 p.m. Monday at the building, located at 921 Garfield St.

Super Kids Camp is sponsored by the Succeeding in School committee, which is the original after-school tutoring program for the building.

Organizer Kathern Harris explained it has been in place at Wheatley for 19 years.

“In 2010, we decided they (students) needed more support so we decided to offer the Super Kids Camp,” she said. “The most exciting thing this year will be Knavas bounce house and water slide, they will be on campus on the 28th of July and the robotics class is also going to be really exciting.”

Dr. Kevin Harris of Nashville’s Stillman College will be instructing the robotics class. Students in his college program are building the robots which will be presented at the camp for students to play with, practice and observe.

“The kids love the ice cream truck that comes, which is local, and when the first responders are here to speak that is always a big day, it is always exciting for them,” said Harris. “It’s a great program. We have a lot to offer. We recruit from the area and there are no income guidelines. We try to include students who are already enrolled in regular programs first and then it is open to the community.”

The free kid’s camp will run from 8:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from July 6-29.

The camp focuses on continuing education and offers age-specific activities for area kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. Some of the other activities listed for this year’s camp include art, computer lab, water safety, yoga, a balloon blast off and a visit from Marty the Magician.

Students will have the opportunity to listen to speakers from the Mingo Wildlife Refuge, local police and fire departments and the health department, as well as enjoying water activities, ice cream and more.
