Public invited to Turkey Trot event

Turkey Trot is a fun, free event sponsored by the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation on Saturday, Nov. 20, at McLane Park.

“This is the first year of the Poplar Bluff Turkey Trot, and I am excited to bring about a new and healthy holiday tradition that brings families together in our parks,” said program director Kennedy Thayer.

The local event is a one-mile walk or run around the park (extra credit for more laps) anytime between 2-4 p.m.

Participants can register any time leading up to the event and the day of event, Thayer said.

Friends, families and pets are welcome to participate, Thayer said.

Thayer has seen “versions of the Turkey Trot before, ranging from a 5k to a marathon. I wanted to coordinate a family-friendly version in one of our parks.”

This is a non-competitive way to celebrate the Thanksgiving season while getting outdoors and getting active, she said.

“Come for a lap or come for four miles,” Thayer said. “Every participant will be registered in our raffle.”

“We will have Loco Kitchen and Casey Cookin’ food trucks there from 1-4 p.m.,” she said. “We also have raffles for Thanksgiving dishes, sponsored by Bizzy Bee’s Catering, and coffee, thanks to Starbucks.”

“Food trucks will be there for anyone — participants, spectators or anyone looking for a snack,” Thayer said.
