MoDOT warns against travel in Southeast Missouri

As of 7 a.m. Thursday.

The Missouri Department of Transportation issued a warning Thursday morning advising drivers in Southeast Missouri to stay off the roads if possible.

Roads through the region are covered after freezing rain and sleet in the overnight hours.

An ice storm warning remains in effect for the region until 6 p.m. Thursday.

“The morning hours will be the time-period for best additional icing of roads and walkways, due to lingering wintry precipitation. The warning is in effect until 6 p.m. this evening,” the NWS service said in a winter weather message. “Dangerous travel conditions will continue. Cold temperatures will keep untreated surfaces frozen, and prolonged light wintry precipitation will hinder any daytime improvements as temperatures remain below freezing. Commutes, especially this morning, will be affected.”

MoDOT reported highways 60 and 67 as covered as of early Thursday morning, along with many other roads in the region, including Highway 53.

Classes have been canceled for Poplar Bluff, Twin Rivers, Neelyvlle and Three Rivers College.
