ESSEX — Stoddard County and federal authorities are investigating a robbery that occurred Monday afternoon at an Essex bank.

At about 12:05 p.m., Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner said in a Facebook post, a man entered the Southern Bank of Essex, located at 101 Trotter St., and robbed the bank.

“After obtaining an unknown amount of cash from the bank teller, the suspect exited the bank and entered an older model four-door sedan, possibly an Impala or Buick LaSabre with faded headlight lenses, and left traveling toward Dexter,” Hefner said.

According to witnesses, the suspect was described as a black male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, with a gray beard and goatee. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a red sock cap.

The robbery is being investigated by the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office, Dexter Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and FBI. Members of the Stoddard County Major Case Squad also responded to assist with investigation.

Further details were not available by press time.

Authorities say the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
