Remembering Mom as Mother's Day nears

To the Editor:

The day we call Mother's Day will sooe be here. We all have a Mother. And we all should say "Thank you". Makes no difference what kind of mother we had. Babies are not grown in a petri dish yet!!

My Mother was a very special lady in many ways. But in other ways Mom was a pain. Could not take a disappointment gracefully. I had an old Mother. I was the eighth child of a family of 10. The Mothers of my age have had so many conveniences that Mothers of my Mother's age did not have.

Mom was an excellent cook. Never used a recipe. Was like so many women my Mother's age, was a dab of this, a pinch of that. I can make corn bread, light bread, bread pudding and other dishes as good as Mom. But Mom's homemade biscuits, and Mom's black walnut cake, no way. I was quite pleased when I could buy canned biscuits, I make black walnut cake, but are from a mix.

Must tell of a very funny thing that happened to Mother. Mother was sitting in the basement, peeling apples and singing hymns. Mother just didn't sing the chorus, but Mom could sing all of the verses. Dad had a little dog that could really howl. He sat just out side the basement door and howled right along with Mom's singing. Some of us children noticed this, but didn't bother the dog. When Mother noticed this Mother threw all of the apples that she hadn't gotten peeled at the dog. Of course we children had to pick up the apples and wash the apples good. After that Mom made sure the dog wasn't outside the door when she would start to peel apples again.

Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers.
