Letter to the Editor

Editorial cartoon was in poor taste

To the Editor:

The DAR recently stated that the "Opinion Page" reflects the opinion of the publisher. The Publisher and Editor of the Daily American Republic newspaper should examine their ethics and responsibility to represent the moral standards they proclaim by printing "Today's Prayer" as a header on the "Opinion Page," and on the same page in the Wednesday June 4, 2014, issue printing an offensive and profane drawing named "New Direction."

I am disappointed at the hypocrisy of using the prayer at the top of the page and in the middle of the page printing an obscene, repulsive, low-minded drawing with no byline or originator--which does not even rise to the mean-spirited political cartoons which are usually published.

Regardless of the new city council members versus the previous city council members, printing this drawing reveals a repudiation of the voters who cast their votes for the new city council members, and begs the question: "what privileges and influence did the DAR receive from the previous council?"

I am an independent voter living outside the city limits and like the majority of the over 20,000 Butler County residents, we come to Poplar Bluff to shop, bank and do most of our business, thereby supporting the city with our taxes. We have a vested interest in seeing all the city government working together with a higher goal of moving our city forward in a responsible way, which is their reasonable service.

My favorite editorials are by Patrick Buchanan whose historical knowledge gives a good perspective and Dr. Ben Carson, who actually has good workable ideas and ways to accomplish them in a bipartisan way.

Please return to a higher standard.
