Thanking council for garden property

Saturday, May 3, 2014

To the Editor:

One behalf of our Historic Depot Board, Iron Mountain Market and citizens who will have a place to plant a small personal garden, I would like to thank the Poplar Bluff City Council for permission to use some of the flood buy-out lots for Community Gardens.

My hope and expectation is that this kind of no cost solutions can be found for many issues that have been facing Poplar Bluff for many years.

Because of your action, two groups of lots have been made available to anyone who wants a place to plant a few tomatoes, green beans or eggplant. In the near future we will be plowing and tilling these areas and they will be made available on a first come first served basis to people who want to get outside and plant a garden. The first garden is behind Key Drugs on the corner of Spring and Ida streets and the second is off Maud Street on Hogg Street. These were suggested by Clark Allen and Dennis Avery, who were aware of the desire to have community gardens and knowledge of available property.

Our ultimate hope is that some extra vegetables will be available for sale at the Iron Mountain Market at the Historic Depot on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings this year.

Anyone who would like to garden may contact us at the Iron Mountain Market or call me at 573-300-9303 to get a plot.
