The start of a Spree
The Poplar Bluff Museum tell many unknown tales of our community. I want to tell you some of those hidden tales found within the museum walls.
He played for 13 years in the NBA. The Golden State Warriors from 1992 to 1998, the New York Knicks from 1998 to 2003, and the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2003 to 2005. He was selected for the NBA All-Stars for four years and the All-NBA First Team. He helped the Knicks proceed to the NBA Finals in 1999 and the Timberwolves to the Western Conference finals in 2004. The name of this NBA player is Latrell Sprewell.
This future NBA superstar started his basketball career here in Poplar Bluff. Coach Gene Bess recruited Latrell Sprewell, nicknamed “Spree” from Washington High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He played for Three Rivers Community College from 1988 to 1990. Sprewell transferred to the University of Alabama from 1990 to 1992 and was selected for the All-SEC Defensive Team.
Sprewell’s Alabama basketball jersey is on display in the Sports Hall of Fame located in the Poplar Bluff Museum.
The Museum is handicap accessible and open free of charge Sunday 1-4 p.m. at 1010 Main St. Tell them Mike sent you.
