Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center to conduct ‘active shooter’ drill Tuesday, Dec. 6

Friday, December 2, 2022

Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center will conduct an “active shooter” drill partnering with area emergency responders Tuesday.

The exercise will simulate, as much as possible, an active-shooter response from local law enforcement, fire departments and emergency-medical-services personnel, according to a press release from the hospital.

The drill will be realistic with loud commands, alarms, sirens and evacuations. Patient care will not be impacted by the drill.

The safety of the hospital and community is very important to PBRMC, officials said. In order to maintain a safe environment for health care staff, it is necessary to practice emergency and crisis response plans by having drills designed to exercise procedures, they said.

The vital part of conducting this type of drill is being “prepared for that type of situation,” said PBRMC’s Director of Risk Management & Facility Compliance Officer Johnna Craft.

“Our ongoing mission to care for our community and to promote wellness and healing is paramount in the ongoing education, partnerships, and readiness for emergency situations,” said CEO Rick Naegler. “Our staff combined with partnering emergency management agencies work closely daily on smaller scale situations, this will allow us to test our systems and communication to respond, react, and deliver as a team to promote safety.”

Personnel from Poplar Bluff’s police and fire departments, Butler County Emergency Management, Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Three Rivers Community College and Missouri State Highway Patrol will participate.

“Due to the current national climate that we live in, we will be conducting an active shooter drill on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The drill will begin at 2 p.m. and is expected to be end within a few hours,” hospital officials report.

The hospital has ensured all area schools and business are aware of the drill date and time. Information has been made public on PBRMC’s website as well as Facebook.
