The R.W. Huntington Municipal Pool in Poplar Bluff will host a grand opening Tuesday to celebrate the completion of recent pool and facility renovations.

The event will start at 1 p.m. and giveaways will be held during the day, according to Lanny Corcimiglia, park department director. Giveaways are expected to include pool toys and candy.

The 100,000-gallon pool was closed during the month of June for repairs. It is normally open by Memorial Day weekend.

The replacement of an 11,000-square-foot liner was recently completed and the park department began the process this week of refilling the pool in preparation for the reopening.

Aquatic supervisor, Kyler Sowell said that the filling process generally takes about two days.

“We have a 13-foot diving well, so that takes a lot of water to fill,” Sowell said.

Chris Waite, Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation administrative assistant, said there are a lot more things happening at the pool this summer season.

Two classes will be offered by the Red Cross, Babysitters Training from 8 a.m. to noon, as well as Junior Lifeguard Training from 1-5 p.m. These classes will be offered for a cost of $50 per student for ages 12-14 and will be available July 18-21.

The pool offers water aerobics classes Monday through Thursday at noon for a cost of $3 per person. Thursday nights are for families, from 6:30-8 p.m. families are encouraged to come and utilize the pool for a discounted cost of $2 each or $5 for a family of four or fewer, children 3 and under are free with a paid adult.

Corcimiglia said the pool and building have seen many improvements over the past few years. The renovations that have been completed so far include new plumbing and hot water, a new shade space, new tables and chairs, an updated entrance and fresh paint.

More additions are planned, he has said, including the addition of more covered areas.

The R.W. Huntington Municipal Pool will be open to the general public for swimming seven days a week from 1-5 p.m.
