Smith's message on impeachment is distorted impression

Monday, December 9, 2019

To the editor:

This letter is in response to an opinion letter by Jason Smith on the subject of impeachment. If his message is the only thing people have read on the subject, then they have received a distorted impression of what is happening.

Impeachment process is about unacceptable, criminal behavior of the elected official we call President. This impeachment is about engaging a foreign government in our election processes. Investigating the potential need for impeachment is the obligation of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress. It is their constitutional duty. It is their job.

It is too soon in the process in impeachment to express an opinion one way or the other. Every effort is being made to legally and fairly get to what happened and when. Any declarations to the contrary are premature and ill informed. Mischaracterizing the process as a “circus” or some other negative term is to discount the seriousness of the issue of free and fair elections in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Lastly, the Democrats are not the enemy. This is not a source of joy or political pleasure to them. Making it into a partisan issue is irresponsible when the very fabric of our constitutional government and rule of law is critically on the line. There is an enemy involved in this process and his name is Putin.

While this remains the land of the free and the home of the brave, if it still indeed remains the land of the free and the home of the brave, bravery is the order of the day, the order of the week, the order of our time. Expression of one’s opinions of things political is a critical and an essential part of our freedom. Thank you Daily American Republic for publishing such diverse opinions.
