Lonnie Davis was a Difference Maker

Friday, June 14, 2019

The community will come together tonight at the former Wheatley School to honor the memory of Lonnie Davis.

“He was just something else,” said Larry McClellon. “It was a pleasure to know him. He was a person you don’t forget.”

Davis, who was inducted into the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, was a talented athlete and musician, an entrepreneur, a coach, a mentor, a father and a father figure to many in the community.

That community spirit that so many people use to describe Davis is exactly the kind of person we’re looking for to honor this summer.

We are currently accepting nominations to honor a Difference Maker in our community but we need your help. We’re looking for people who never give a second thought to help, who volunteer routinely and never expect anything in return.

A quick nomination form can be found online at www.darnews.com/forms/dm and the deadline is less than a month away. The nominee can be making a difference in any number of ways and in any of the area communities we cover.

Those nominations will be narrowed down by a panel of judges to 10 candidates who will be honored at a banquet at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Holiday Inn in Poplar Bluff. They will also be introduced in a special section to the DAR prior to the banquet and each will receive a thank you package. A Difference Maker of the Year will be announced at the banquet.

We’ve made it our goal to shine a spotlight on the people who make a difference in our community and we want your help.
