A New Year and renewed hopes

Saturday, December 30, 2017

I suppose God looks upon our lives as a whole rather than breaking them up in fragments of time we call days and months and years. But, since we do fragmentize time, it seems fitting at the beginning of a new year that we look back on last year with greater determination and renewed hope of accomplishing that which God would have us to and of becoming the kind of person we want to be. We are told to "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil." Ephesians 5:15-16 RSV. There is much crime, hate, prejudice, injustice and apathy around us. But, in the after glow of Christmas, we can see hope for our troubled world even as Christ's birth brought hope to an idolatrous, immoral world in that day. Our hope now, as then, is based on the changing of people's lives by the Gospel of Christ--"For the Gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation unto everyone that believeth." Romans 1:16 b. Conditions are bad, even shameful, but not hopeless. Take heart, surrender your life to Christ and become leaven in the world to move others toward Him. This is our hope--the only hope promised in this new year.
