Guided hike at Pilot Knob Refuge

Saturday, September 2, 2017

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff will lead three guided hikes to the top of Pilot Knob National Wildlife Refuge Saturday, Sept. 23. Hikes will take place at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. These guided hikes are taking place in conjunction with other events during the reenactment of the Battle of Pilot Knob. During the hike, staff from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will discuss the importance of Pilot Knob to the endangered Indiana bats and the history of Pilot Knob Mountain. Hikers will meet at the Brogan trailhead on Fort Davidson State Historic site. Hikers will promptly depart for scheduled hikes on the refuge. Space is limited; participants must pre-register to reserve their spot for the hike by calling the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge at 573-222-3589. The hike is strenuous, as the trail to the top will go up steep terrain with loose rock and uneven footing. Participants must be physically able to make this hike. Registered participants will receive further information when they register.
