Bernie leads the field for SCAA Tournament

Bernie has earned a by as the No. 2 seed in the Stoddard Activities Association softball tournament.

The Lady Mules will take on the winner of No 3. seed Dexter and No. 6 Puxico in the second around.

Advance was the unanimous top seed and will face the winner of No. 4 Woodland and No. 5 Bloomfield.

Bloomfield and Puxico finished tied in the seeding votes and the Lady Wildcats earned the higher seed after a coin flip.

Bernie (8-3) has picked up wins against Puxico and Clearwater in its last two games and beat No. 3 seed Dexter 5-0 earlier in the season. Bernie lost to Advance 7-4.

Pitcher Blakely Bradshaw leads the Lady Mules in the circle.

She, along with Addie Shelton and Morgan Baker, anchor the Bernie lineup.

"We have played much better of late," Bernie coach Brad Botsch said. "We lost 2 of our first 4 and have played better and better since. I think we'll continue to progress and get better as we go. We always want to compete well in the SCAA tournament, so hopefully the girls will be ready to go."

Here's a look a Monday's quarterfinal games

DEXTER VS. PUXICO, 4:30 p.m. Dexter (4-6) beat Bloomfield 13-1 in its first game of the season and has picked up wins against Woodland, Zalma and Charleston, as well.

The top five hitters of Dexter's lineup will be key. Sophomore Kaylee Carey is hitting .462 with five RBIs. Her 12 hits leads the team. Dexter currently has four players batting over .400.

Sophomore pitcher Morgan Ross will likely pitch and has a 2.70 ERA.

Puxico (0-4) will be playing short-handed with several seniors and its top pitcher out for different reasons.

Freshman Kaytlynn Haynes has moved from shortstop and will be pitching and batting leadoff. She has faced 141 batters this season with 15 strikeouts and 16 walks.

Senior left fielder Sarah Harp may add some power to the lineup.

WOODLAND VS. BLOOMFIELD, 4:30 p.m. Bloomfield (1-12) beat Scott County Central in March for its only win this season. The Lady Wildcats previously lost to Woodland 17-2 on April 6 and have also lost by double digits to Bernie and Dexter. Bloomfield has not yet played Puxico this spring.
