PBPD issues

fraud alert

The Poplar Bluff Police Department recently has received several fraud complaints, which involve a suspect trying to coerce the victim into paying money for a (nonexistent) bond.

In the most recent complaints, the suspect identified himself as "Deputy Jeff Rolland with Butler County," and threatened to arrest the victims if they did not pay an $800 bond using prepaid credit cards.

In previous complaints, a suspect posed as a member of the victim's family, said he or she had been arrested and asked the victim to pay his or her bond using a prepaid credit card.

Law enforcement agencies do not collect bond money over the phone.

Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to hang up and immediately call a local law enforcement agency.
