PB NSDAR: thanks for making Constitution Day a success

Monday, September 29, 2014

To the Editor,

The Poplar Bluff Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution extends our appreciation to everyone in the community who helped make Constitution Day, September 17, a success. The reverberations of the church bells ringing across Poplar Bluff which marked our heritage of liberty was very inspiring and uplifting. The following churches rang bells: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, South Poplar Bluff General Baptist Church, Zion Lutheran Church, and Mt. Zion. Coon Island General Baptist Church, in the Neelyville area, also rang bells. Knowing this was part of a simultaneous coast to coast event made it even more inspiring.

We also thank State Representative Todd Richardson for his presentation of a Resolution from the Missouri House of Representatives that marked this 227th Anniversary of the signing of our nation's founding document and his remarks on the history of Constitution Day. James Todd shared some deeply inspiring history about the challenges and goals of our founding fathers as they struggled in Philadelphia to create our Constitution. The Rev. Josh Reasons brought to mind our fore-fathers' trust in God and their desire to preserve religious liberty across the sweep of time in this country in their creation of our government. Many thanks to the Poplar Bluff Public Library for hosting this celebration, and also to Brittney McKay from KWOC radio for her help in producing the public service announcements and for allowing chapter members to come on her show, "Brittney on the Bluff". A special thank you goes to the Poplar Bluff Senior High School JROTC unit and their instructor, Maj. Gregory Crites for their impressive flag ceremony.

This past week chapter daughters completed their task of handing out pocket Constitutions to 16 area 8th grades and to several adult education programs, at schools located in Butler, Oregon, Ripley, Wayne, Carter and Stoddard counties for a total of 1,378 students in this outreach.

Our chapter daughters consider it an honor and a privilege to serve the Poplar Bluff and surrounding area during this observance.

Kind Regards,

Margaret Shackleford, Regent
