Big business

vs. unions

I read the article in the Thursday edition of the DAR about right to work legislation that some of our congressmen have stated they intend to bring to the floor in 2014. I'd like to thank the paper for an honest job of reporting the facts about who is behind this push. It was stated that there was quote "national money to be had" as well as " large donors in the state" to fund advertising campaigns. These donors and those who are making "national money" available to influence our labor laws in Missouri, in all likelihood have never had to pay union dues, or at least not in some time. The truth is, these people or groups would like to see unions become a thing of the past. Unions have always allowed workers to collect higher wages for jobs than businesses would like to pay. I mean, if they can get you to perform the same job for less money, they get to keep the extra profit. The truth is, Big business only sees another way to collect another drop of blood from the workers who they employ. Some of the lawmakers are touting the idea that if we just get rid of unions, we'll see an influx of jobs to our state. I can assure you that union employment in the state of Missouri is lower than at anytime in the last 20-30 years. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics website, only 8.9 percent of all of Missouri's workers were union affiliated. Think about that for a minute. That means that roughly 90 percent of all the jobs in Missouri are ALREADY non-union jobs. That's simple fact. Since that's the case, what is it that big business fears about a small percentage of the jobs in Missouri? They fear the same things that they fear everywhere: lower profits. You see, if you can get a job say....painting water towers..... for 7.00 per hour at one place or do they exact same job for a union company for 11.00 per hour, which one would you the worker choose? Throw in the fact that most Union jobs have some type of pension plan as well as paid vacation and you start to see the dilemma big business finds itself in: workers will leave their company to go to the union company the first chance they get. Businesses understand this so to entice workers to stay with them, they offer a comparable rate of pay and usually some type of 401 k. In the end that costs them money. I think it's easy to see why Right to Work laws are wrong for working Missourians. Do not be deceived, the same big business who courts your vote now to support right to work laws, will squeeze every last dime they can from you to recoup their costs after it's passed. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Reader: fans students rude

I'd just like to say that I agree wholeheartedly with the Speak Out article on Jan. 2nd. Poplar Bluff High School students/fans were rude. They are rude and disrespectful to visiting teams and I think they should be stopped immediately.

They oughta be proud of ladies

This is in response about the TV reporters from some woman who was really proud she was a woman. Well, I really like those little ole girls those women on that show. I think they do a good job and there is people out there would take off to the basement and forget their kids. In fact, they forget and leave them in the cars sometime with the windows rolled up. We all hear about that now and then in the DAR. But, I'm glad they are good lookin' and fit in dresses real good and not look like Barbara Bush from Texas. I mean that other lady she can't wear a dress good. She's a nice lady, but they oughta be proud of ladies and they way they look--all handsome and beautiful and all that good stuff. She's just probably looks like Barbara Bush and she's just jealous, so blow it, lady! Bye.

Learning

from nature

I seen that beautiful picture of that Snowy Owl in the paper today. I cut it out and I'm gonna frame it. They're from the Arctic. You know humans can learn a lesson. Animals know stuff before we do. Like dogs and cats and stuff like that can know earthquakes are comin' and stuff like that. They feel it, you know. Them Snow Owls are moving south. They are moving down here in Missouri. Could that be tellin' us that maybe the Arctic is on the move and we're gonna have all that ice age down here instead of up north? We better start checking things out, I think. God bless America. Bye.
