Pretty spring bulbs

To the Editor,

I must be slowing down just a bit, it never crossed my mind that no other place that I have lived, and as many of readers know I have lived many, are the spring bulbs are as pretty as here. But I have never seen the bulbs pretty there.

As I think back I think the bulbs should have been pretty in South Africa. But I cannot remember of ever seeing the spring bulbs there. The more than beautiful proteas grow wild ever where. I have read that Hawaii is getting the proteas started there.

One thing that I really enjoyed while in South Africa was the amaryllis. Could buy the bulbs for a dollar a piece. I purchased every color there was. So beautiful!! Most of the time so expensive here. Many people planted the bulbs in their yards. I just had the bulbs in pots in the house.

One man on the job in Saudia Arabia, thought he was going to be so clever, his yard was going to be the prettiest of all the yards. He took to Saudia a big lot of bulbs. Which is illegal. Keep in his refrigerator for months. Planted in the month we call spring here. There was hardly any blooms. He asked me what I thought was the problem. I did not know. Still do not know. I know the bulbs have be very for months. Someone said that is so the bulbs can rest and I know that is when the bulbs multiply.

The recent club meetings that I go to, was to answer roll call, with your favorite flower. Mine was the spring bulbs. Really do not have to do much to have so many beautiful blooms. Can have many more blooms if the bulbs are dug up and thinned out every few years. I have seen the bulbs in full bloom and be frozen solid. When first thawed out, would fall to the ground, then in the matter of hours, would be upright and just as pretty as ever.

Just remember the bulbs are more beautiful here than anywhere. So enjoy! I have heard people say, "Oh just those old springs bulbs" I tell them those old springs bulbs let us know that spring is on the way. And I feel spring is a very joyful time. I really do enjoy to watch the flowers bloom, and hear the birds sing. Is hard for me to walk now, but I am going to get on my yard tractor and see if I can find some wild flowers in the woods. The wild iris are much more beautiful than the tame ones. Don wants to start an iris bed, maybe we can find some wild iris to put in it.
