Difference Makers recognizes many humble, good people
Over the last week, I’ve had the opportunity to meet lots of new people while working on the newspaper’s upcoming Difference Makers program.
If you haven’t heard of it, Difference Makers is a program designed to highlight people from the region who go above and beyond to help others in their community in various ways.
Honestly, I was impressed with every person I met this week for one simple reason — not a single one does their charitable work for the accolades. They don’t look over their shoulder to see who’s watching, and they don’t seek the limelight.
When people do charitable things for the right reasons instead of some kind of glory, they tend to have a hard time talking about themselves on camera, and I witnessed that a lot.
“I’m not very comfortable talking about myself” was a common thing I heard. And, each one recognized the help they receive from so many others.
“Humble” is the best way I can describe them, and that’s the way it should be.
Difference Makers certainly will be different this year, another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the coming days, you’ll see feature articles on the top 10 finalists, and ultimately, the winner. You’ll also hear from those who nominated them.
I encourage you to read each one because there are some interesting, humble stories about some very good, caring people.
In this time of stress and uncertainty, we could all use a bit of positivity, and I hope what our staff has done with Difference Makers can provide that for you.
